The Te Araroa trail season has begun. Over the next few weeks walkers from all over the world will start trickling into Whananaki - stopping to stay the night, have a feed, and walk our famous bridge.

The official Te Araroa season runs from 1st September to 30th April, however the first walkers of the season were spotted in the holiday camp last week.

Whananaki features as a stop on the trail, with hikers having to walk on the road from Pigs Head Road to Whananaki village, including the often dangerous “cutting”.

Two-to-four-thousand mainly overseas tourists walk the Te Araroa trail each year, which runs between Cape Reinga and Bluff.
