Local FM Radio Coming to Whananaki

Standby for the launch of Whananaki FM on August 31st.

For the first time since broadcasting began in New Zealand over 100 years ago, Whananaki is about to have its own radio station.

Operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week, Whananaki FM will be transmitted from Whananaki General Store when it launches just before 1pm on Sunday August 31st. Locals and visitors alike will be able to listen on 88.2FM and the popular iHeartRadio App.

Whananaki FM will carry local Whananaki news every hour, alongside news from NZME's Newstalk ZB News Service. Indepth marine weather, surf and fishing reports will supplement the hourly bulletins. "And get ready to hear lots of locals on-the-air," says the station's deputy programming co-ordinator Dallas Gurney. "We really want Whananaki FM to feature as many local voices, stories and views possible."

In keeping with the focus on the Whananaki community, the station is holding an event on Sunday for locals to choose the songs played on Whananaki FM. "Come along, have a free feed and listen to some tunes," says Gurney.
